EMC gives content tools a Web 2.0 makeover

Documentum ECM v6.5 adds support for blogs, wikis and collaboration

Written by Rosalie Marshall

Storage vendor EMC has revealed that its enterprise content management (ECM) suite is to undergo a major Web 2.0-type overhaul, which will make its tools easier and more intuitive for users.

Documentum ECM 6.5, which ships later this month, includes a choice of different user interfaces, which have a similar look and feel to Apple's iTunes, making it easier for users to find the required documents, said Chris Blaik, EMC content management and archiving European marketing director.

“This new suite of products embraces Web 2.0 and understands the way people works while mitigating risk,” said Blaik.

Other enhancements includes modules for handling images, Media WorkSpace, and tools to create web pages, called Web Publisher Page Builder, which runs on an Adobe Flex platform.

The release will also be supported by improved XML handling. EMC has added a new XML database to its Documentum line, XML Store, which helps users archive XML documents and components.

“In the world of Web 2.0, most information moved and accessed in different interfaces is in XML format and are now we are allowing users to store all that content in one area,” said Blaik.

It will also include support for corporate blogs and wikis, through its CenterStage Essentials module. This will improve users' ability to collaborate through shared team workspaces, said Blaik.

CentreStage Essentials is currently available as a free beta download, with a full enterprise edition pencilled to ship in the first quarter of 2009. Pricing details have yet to be disclosed.
