The government has today committed £3m in funding to a new scheme to promote fuel-efficient driving techniques.

The Department for Transport estimates that ensuring tyres are correctly pumped up, changing gear earlier and keeping baggage to a minimum could save motorists a month's worth of fuel a year.

Central to the new scheme is a plan to compel driving instructors to provide candidates with feedback on how green their driving is as part of tests – although a driver's fuel efficiency will not affect whether they pass or fail the test.

"To help the next generation of motorists drive in a way that is better for their wallets and the environment, the driving test will now assess how successfully they follow fuel-efficient and eco-safe driving advice," said transport minister Jim Fitzpatrick.

Tips on greener driving have been included in official learning materials for those learning to drive since 2005.

A range of smarter driving tips will be also be promoted on radio and television in an attempt to encourage existing motorists to embrace fuel-efficiency measures.
